AWAKENING HERITAGE: 12 ARTISTS REIMAGINE LOCAL MEMORY ACROSS HOI AN AND DRIFTWOOD VILLAGE

Over the course of five creative days in mid-July, a group of twelve artists—nine from Vietnam and three guest artists from the Philippines—embarked on an immersive artistic journey across the historic and poetic landscapes of Quang Nam province. Organized by Cui Lu Art Space, the “Awakening Heritage” residency was more than a chance to create; it was a space for dialogue, exploration, and reconnection with cultural memory.

From sketching by the Co Co River at sunset to gathering impressions from the ancient streets of Hoi An and the quiet charm of Làng Củi Lũ (Driftwood Village), each artist encountered the region not just as a backdrop, but as a living archive of stories, textures, and human experience.

CREATING ACROSS TIME AND PLACE: A MULTILAYERED JOURNEY

The residency led artists across multiple symbolic sites that hold centuries of heritage: the bustling aisles of Hoi An Market, where rhythms of daily life unfold in color and scent; the serene silhouette of the Japanese Covered Bridge, a testament to cultural convergence; and the slow, steady current of the Co Co River, once a vital trade route and now a source of quiet inspiration.

In Driftwood Village, artists experienced another rhythm of life—earthy, handmade, rooted. This tranquil setting, home to Cui Lu Art Space, offered a place for introspection and grounding. Whether creating with natural materials, sketching local life, or exchanging stories with fellow artists, each participant brought their own memories and visions into conversation with this unique environment.

ART AS A VESSEL OF MEMORY, DIALOGUE, AND TRANSFORMATION

The theme “Awakening Heritage” encouraged artists to move beyond nostalgia and explore how memory and tradition can evolve through contemporary practice. Each work created during the residency is a one-of-a-kind piece—reflecting not only personal impressions and local materials, but also a spirit of transcultural dialogue.

Through this creative process, artists asked vital questions:
– What does it mean to inherit a cultural identity?
– How do we carry the memory of a place across borders and time?
– Can art become a bridge—not only between countries—but between generations?

The answers appear in many forms: abstract landscapes, found-object installations, figurative paintings, experimental media. Together, the body of work forms a collective mosaic—capturing the fluid nature of heritage, shaped by both rootedness and movement.

UNVEILING THE WORKS: FOLLOW THE JOURNEY

Beginning tomorrow, Cui Lu Art Space will unveil each artist’s work through a series of online spotlights on our official fanpage. Each post will reveal the story behind the piece—the process, the place, and the personal connection behind the final result. It is an invitation for viewers not only to see, but to feel how heritage comes alive through the eyes of each creator.

We believe that heritage is not static—it is dynamic, emotional, and ever-evolving. This residency reminds us that preserving culture does not always mean looking back—it can also mean creating forward.
